The Role
We are seeking a hands-on Head of Engineering, who will act as technical architect, leader, and builder. You will lead and inspire our technical teams while staying deep in the code, ensuring engineering excellence while iteratively improving our platform in a fast-paced, high-ambiguity startup environment. This is a foundational leadership hire as we scale from early pilots and expand our modular AI agent platform across 3PLs and mid-market operators.
Responsibilities
- Architect the long-term progression of eight50’s AI-powered warehouse orchestration platform.
- Lead by example: hands-on coding, technical design reviews, and architectural decisions while building and mentoring a high-performing engineering team.
- Ensure pragmatic, iterative product delivery aligned with startup velocity while planning for scalability, modularity, and clean interfaces.
- Guide the AI agent architecture, including prompt engineering, agent design, and integrations.
- Drive modular code design and structured interfaces for WMS and other system connectors.
- Collaborate with the CEO and early customers to align product development with user needs.
- Establish engineering processes with a balance of speed and stability.
- Contribute actively to coding (TypeScript) and system design.
Must-Have Skills and Experience
- Hands-on technical leader with startup experience, unafraid to code while leading teams.
- Architectural design for SaaS platforms, balancing long-term vision with immediate delivery.
- Deep TypeScript expertise, with experience in structuring large codebase and implementing clean, modular designs.
- Experience with GCP or AWS in a production environment.
- MongoDB and vector search architecture for AI agent retrieval and operational data.
- AI prompt engineering and agent design experience, preferably using frameworks like Mastra.ai combined with RAG and extensive memory.
- Proven track record of delivering iterative improvements while planning for scale in a high-ambiguity environment.
- Understanding of AI Agents architecture, including memory, context management, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and MCP tools.
- Deep experience with system integrations using REST and GraphQL APIs, designing robust, scalable interfaces for external and internal systems.
Nice-to-Have
- Experience with Vue.js, Tailwind for front-end development.
- Familiarity with Mastra.ai or building autonomous agent systems.
- Experience in warehouse tech, supply chain, or operational systems.
