We are seeking a Vice President – Strategy & Operations to serve as the senior strategic and operational partner to the Head of the Pioneering Intelligence Initiative. This highly visible role combines future-back strategic development, operational excellence, and cross-portfolio collaboration, offering the opportunity to shape the trajectory of innovation across Flagship’s ecosystem.

Position Summary
As the VP – Strategy & Operations, you will collaborate directly with the Head of the Pioneering Intelligence Initiative, responsible for co-developing and communicating a bold, future-back AI strategy, driving operational excellence across our technical and research organization, and orchestrating strategic collaborations across Flagship, its portfolio companies, and external global partners. This role requires visionary strategy, operational discipline, and exceptional relationship-building skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Development: Co-create and continuously refine a future-back AI strategy with the Head of the Initiative and senior leadership across Flagship Pioneering. Anticipate global AI trends, competitive dynamics, talent market dynamics, and emerging opportunities, translating vision into actionable roadmaps.
- Operational Leadership: Oversee and optimize operational models for the Initiative’s teams spanning digital technologies, data platform, agentic AI, and molecular modeling. Support our team in establishing planning, processes, budgeting, and metrics to drive accountability, speed, and quality in execution.
- Global Engagement: Build and manage relationships with global technology partners, leading research institutions, AI industry leaders, and industry influencers. Represent the Initiative in strategic engagements with portfolio company executives, venture team leadership, and external stakeholders.
- Cross-Portfolio Integration: Drive alignment across Flagship Pioneering and its portfolio, ensuring Pioneering Intelligence accelerates value creation for each entity. Translate cross-company needs into shared technology strategies and joint execution plans.
Qualifications
- Extensive experience in senior strategic roles (e.g., management consulting, corporate strategy VP, innovation leader) with a proven record of shaping and executing transformative initiatives.
- Strong understanding of AI trends, implications, and applications; technical fluency required.
- Demonstrated success in leading multi-disciplinary technical teams and implementing operational systems in dynamic, high-growth environments.
- Proven ability to operate effectively across geographies, industries, and stakeholder groups.
- Exceptional communication and narrative skills, with the ability to align value across technical teams to C-suite executives.
- Strong track record of cultivating trust and partnerships across internal and external senior stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working at the intersection of AI and technology-driven innovation domains such as the life sciences, physical sciences, or engineering.
- Success translating AI strategy into concrete value.
- Familiarity with operating models for multi-disciplinary R&D or technical organizations.
